Quack nurses dominate the Nigerian health care system

Nigeria health care system overrun with uncertified nurses

Nigeria health care system seems to be in trouble as quack nurses are being trained and  employed by medical doctors and in the light of this, these individuals  pose as real nurses  and  offer medical services to patients in return for money.

Who is a quack?

A quack is a "fraudulent or ignorant pretender to medical skill" or "a person who pretends, professionally or publicly, to have skill, knowledge, qualification or credentials they do not possess.

Who is a Registered Nurse?

A registered nurse ( RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license.

As of 2019, the total population of the country ( Nigeria) is over 200.9 million, ranking 7th in the world. Last collected Data in 2012 by the Nigeria National Bureau of Statistics, the total population of citizens in Nigeria was around 166.2 million people.

This means that the population of Nigeria has increased greatly by 34.7 million placing us as the 7th most populated country.

Among other populated countries of the world are: China, India, United States, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Russia and Mexico.

Among this listed countries Nigeria is among the countries with quack nurses moving and occupying positions in the health care system, making our hospitals, pharmacies etc underrated.

With the increasing rate of  the population of this great country Nigeria,  how do quackery in Nursing end as there is also every possibilities that in the 34.7 million increase in population the Nurse Quacks should also have increased  too making the fight a difficult one. as the government has played little role in eradicating Nurse Quacks.

As the government health care system is overstretched and underfunded, private medical outfits have taken the responsibility to fill the gap and provide alternative choice to health care seekers.

Despite the presence of the various private medical organization in the country only very few of them work with certified nurses and majority of them use uncertified nurses popularly called quacks in their various health care set ups.

Who are the victims of quack nurses?

A survey carried out showed that the patients who are victims to these quack nurses are ignorant or are either poor as these quack tend to offer cheaper services to these patients.

Another study was also carried out and it has showed that half of the population of the country has received medical services from these quack nurses in one way or the other.

What should the authorities do to solve this problem of quackery in the nursing profession ?

The government is seen to be doing little or nothing in solving the problem of getting rid of fake nurses who are responsible for deaths and injuries than the actual cure.

The authorities of the nursing profession should call on the senate to pass a “ Nursing Anti-Quakery Bill”

What are other possible way to end this quackery ?

The issue of Quack Nurses are growing day by day in Nigeria. To the light of these it will be better that the nursing practice regulatory bodies ask every hospital in the country be it private or the government sector to place a batch in their uniforms showing their name, qualifications and school attended  e.g  James David, Rn. BNsc. Lagos State University.

A recent systematic review demonstrated that the greatest improvements in initiation and continuation of good health care system free from quacks were seen when education was provided concurrently across the various settings including homes, community, and even the health system.
